PES is the Brother format, which makes it the most common one in home embroidery. Newer machines read newer PES versions; if yours is old, PEC is the safer choice.

PES runs on Brother, Baby Lock and Bernina Deco. PES stores thread colours, so the palette you see in the preview travels with the file.

JPG is what most photos and scans are. Heavy compression leaves faint halos around edges; the engine smooths them before tracing, but a clean source always stitches better than a re-saved one.
